Suicide Awareness Month is an important time to raise awareness and provide support for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Here are some key things to know:
1. Learn to Recognize Warning Signs: signs of suicide: changes in behavior, withdrawal from friends and family, talking about feeling hopeless, talking about death or dying, texting or writing suicidal statements/notes, and giving away valuables
2. Seek Help: If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, reach out for help immediately. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK, The Suicide and Crisis Hotline call 988, Text 741741, Crisis MN Warmline Peer Support 651-288-0400. Ask your friend or loved one if they are feeling suicidal. If so, seek help.
3. End the Stigma: Encourage open conversations about mental health. Reducing the stigma around seeking help is crucial in preventing suicide.
4. Develop a Support System: Support from friends, family, and professionals can make a significant difference. Let your friends and loved ones know you're there for them, and encourage them to seek help from a Licensed Professional.
5. Self-Care: Take care of your own mental health and well-being. You can better support others when you are mentally and emotionally well. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, get outside for a 30 minute walk or run daily, develop good sleep hygiene aiming for at least 7 hours of sleep a night, stay hydrated, and connect with your people and pets.
Remember, suicide is a serious issue, and it’s important to approach it with empathy, compassion, and a commitment to helping those in need.
